In view of the rumors that Justice Louis D. Brandeis may resign from the United States Supreme Court to take over the leadership of the World Zionist Organization in connection with the present crisis, an editorial in Monday’s New York Evening Telegram deplores the possibility, saying that the withdrawal of Mr. Justice Brandeis from the Supreme Court would be “a national calamity.”
Justice Brandeis is praised in the editorial for his liberal interpretation of American law and for his brilliant juridical ability. The editorial calls attention to a book which has just been issued on the social and economic views of Mr. Justice Brandeis. Thirty important legal interpretations are noted in the book, twenty-six of which dissent from the views held by the majority of the justices of the United States Supreme Court.
“A reading of this book convinces one that Justice Brandeis has always fought for justice for the workingman, has supported organized labor in its struggles with capitalism, has upheld laws which were created for the purpose of fighting unemployment, long working hours and unsanitary working conditions,” declares the editorial.
“Justice Brandeis,” continues the editorial, “has always been a fervent advocate of individual liberty, upholding the right of every man to think and speak as he pleases. The dissenting opinions of Mr. Justice Brandeis,” says the Telegram, “will live in history after the opinions of his colleagues will have been long forgotten.”
