The cornerstone of the new Congregation B’nai Israel synagogue at Avenue I and East Forty-ninth street, Brooklyn, was laid yesterday with impressive ceremonies.
Louis J. Moss, president of the United Hebrew Congregations, delivered the principal address.
“The synagogue,” he said, “must be made the instrumentality through which Jewish life should express itself. A strong synagogue will make for a strong Judaism, and a weak one for its disintegration. I have more faith in the leadership which the synagogue can develop for Jewish life than that of any other agency now existing or that which at any other time may be formed.”
Other speakers were: Assemblyman Albert Schranzer, Rabbi Benjamin H. Orrelick, Rabbi Samuel Schnitzer, Harry Weitsen, Benjamin Berkowitz and Mrs. Ludwig S. Solomon Gottlieb was master of ceremonies. Cantor Henry Rosenblatt rendered vocal selections.
