Rabbi Louis I. Newman, Assistant Rabbi of Temple Israel, New York, was elected last night, Rabbi of Temple Emanu-El, to succeed the late Dr. Martin A. Meyer, who died suddenly about six months ago.
The Temple Emanu-El of San Francisco is one of the oldest temples in the United States, and is considered to be the second largest congregation in the country. It has a very old tradition, having been established by the Jewish 49ers, and is one of the largest centers of religious and cultural activities on the Pacific coast. Dr. Jacob Voorsanger was the predecessor of Dr. Meyer.
The late Dr. Meyer, who was a teacher of the new Rabbi, was known as a great scholar and commanding personality; and the Board of Trustees of Temple Emanu-El have been endeavoring to secure for his place a Rabbi who would be able to continue his work. Rabbis from all over the country submitted their applications.
Rabbi Newman was born in Providence, Rhode Island, and received his B. A. at Brown University. He received his M. A. at the University of California and his Ph.D. at Columbia. For five years, preceding his appointment to Temple Israel, Rabbi Newman was assistant to Rabbi Stephen S. Wise at the Free Synagogue.
