United Nations Secretary General U Thant was called upon here today to use his good offices to persuade the Soviet Government “to soften the rigors of their attitude to their Jewish minority.” In a petition presented today to Ambassador Franklin Williams, a member of the United States delegation to the United Nations, with a request that he submit it to Mr. Thant, the Student Struggle for Soviet Jewry, which last week sponsored the “Jericho March,” on the Soviet Mission to the United Nations, appealed to the Secretary-General to bring the tragic problem of Soviet Jewry to the forefront of world public consciousness.

Stanley Lowell, chairman of the New York City Human Rights Commission, presented the petition to Ambassador Williams. Also taking part in the presentation were Mrs. Constance Baker Motley, Borough President of Manhattan, and Rep. William Fitts Ryan, of New York.
