That Jews are suited to the work of digging for gold in the mines in the region of Ticse was declared by the Director of the mining operations, M. Lumberg. Mr. Lumberg warned, however, that Jews should not come to the mines in the belief that the ork is easy and the profits great. The dream of making a fortune overnight is only a false illusion. Those who have come to the mines in this hope usually suffered hunger and unemployment, some of them even perishing. The maximum earnings are six roubles daily, whereas two roubles per day is a common wage.
He pointed out that working conditions are very bad. Recently, however measures have been taken to improve the standard of living, and the outlook is there that the miner will be able to live under conditions at least not worse than the population in neighboring villages.
