That the Dead Sea is a fabulously rich gold mine was the assertion made today by the French scientist, Georges. Claude, writing in the “Revue Animateur des Temps Nouveaux.” Prof. Claude states that in October 1922 he called on Raymond Poincare. explaining to him that sea water contains small quantities of gold, in a measure, however, insufficient to make its extraction profitable. The content of gold and chemicals in the waters of the Dea Sea is forty times greater the usual sea water and their extraction is, therefore, highly profitable, he declared. Prof. Claude estimated that the actual gold content of the Dead Sea is ten milliard pounds and that at least one-third of it could be extracted within the next fifteen years.
Since the English seem to take no interest in the Dead Sea, Prof. Claude told Poincare, perhaps it would be possible for French diplomats to persuade England to return Palestine to Turkey from whose government France might be able to obtain a monopoly on the exploitation of the gold in the Dead Sea. Now, however, the article concludes, England has learned the value of the Dead Sea and the Turks are no longer the friends of France.
