The 15 foreign ministers of the European Union postponed a decision on whether to withdraw preferential trade status from Israeli goods produced in the West Bank, Gaza Strip, Golan Heights or eastern Jerusalem. The postponement was agreed to in an effort to prevent the subject from disrupting a planned meeting next week in Palermo, Italy, involving E.U. officials and representatives of countries bordering the Mediterranean. Israel, which has been invited to the so-called Euro-Med conference, has threatened to deny Europe a role in the peace process if it boycotted certain Israeli goods.
