The annual drive for the Community Chest in this city reached a dramatic climax at the closing dinner Monday night when it was announced that through the underwriting of a shortage of $115,000 by Mr. and Mrs. Felix Fuld and Mr. and Mrs. Uzal H. McCarter the campaign had successfully achieved its goal of $1,152,363.28.
The announcement which was made by Mr. McCarter, who is one of the city’s leading bankers, came after a hurried conference with Mr. Fuld at the speakers table, unobserved by the workers who were busy with reports. Mr. and Mrs. Fuld, who at the start of the drive last week had pledged $30,000, guaranteed $57,500 additional of the amount short, and Mr. and Mrs. McCarter who ## $57,500, thus enabling the drive to meet its quota.
This makes the first time that the Newark chest has raised its full quota in its six years of existence. It was said later that a concerted effort will be made to get in additional subscriptions.
The Conference of Jewish Charities is one of the constituents of the local Chest and its quota for the ensuing year is $312,965.96. In general the larger individual Jewish donations this year were increased over last year. Some of the larger subscriptions were: $12,000, Michael, Albert and Benjamin Hollander; $10,000, Eisele & King; $5,000, Louis V. Aronson; $3,600, M. Augenblick & Bros.; $3,500, William E. Lehman; $3,000, Frank I. Liveright, Charles Stopper; $2,500, Louis Kamm, Inc., Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Stern.
Charles M. Meyers, Newark, N. J. lawyer, has been appointed Corporation Counsel of that city by the City Commission.
