The approaching week of Passover is felt in every town in the Republic of Poland where there is a Jewish community. Life in many homes has brightened due to the receipt of substantial amounts of Passover money from American relatives, according to the custom of providing their needy brethren with Passover fare.
A band of swindlers has taken advantage of the Passover season and issued forged checks on American banks. The forged checks were presented in several Warsaw banks which have suffered heavy losses as a result of this. The checks were issued in small amounts, all under $100 and therefore aroused little suspicion. The checks were made out in the name of well known American banks which enjoy credit in Poland. Many arrests were made in connection with this discovery of the plot in Warsaw, Vilna and Bialystok. Twenty of the arrested were sentenced to imprisonment. More arrests are expected.
