The Brooklyn Academy of Music will present the American debut of the Jewish State Theater of Bucharest in two classic Yiddish plays, The Dybbuk and The Pearl Necklace. The plays, which will be in Yiddish with simultaneous English translations, will be presented in repertory from tonight until Oct. 1. The Dybbuk by S. Ansky is based on Jewish folklore and is a serious treatment of Jewish mysticism. The Pearl Necklace, a musical revue by Israel Berkovici, contains 50 of the most beloved Jewish folk songs in 16 scenes. The Jewish State Theater of Bucharest was founded as the first professional Yiddish theater in the world by Abraham Goldfadden in 1876 and has flourished since then. The company recently returned from a successful tour in Israel.
