Over in London, the spotlight of publicity recently beat upon a young man in his thirties who has quietly and unobstrusively worked at his post of Financial Secretary of the British Treasury these many months.
Leslie Hore-Belisha, son of Lady Hore, is generally considered the first lieutenant of the Chancellor of the Treasury. A barrister and journalist, educated in England, Germany and France, Hore-Belisha served with distinction during the War, winning the rank of major.
Frequently spoken of as a protential “second Disraeli,” Hore-Belisha is distinguished for his clarity of expression both orally and in writing. His turn in the spotlight came as a result of his statement that Britain’s adverse trade balance had practically vanished.
A member of the Spanish and Portuguese Jews’ Congregation, Hore-Belisha recently served as an elder of the synagogue, one of Britain’s oldest, if not the oldest.
Frau Maria Goebbels, wife of the most vociferous expounder of the Aryan theory, dyes her hair every two weeks in order to maintain that perfect state of Nordie blondeness which her husband so devoutly admires. Frau Goebbels is a remarkable woman in many respects. She is perhaps the one woman who claims to be older than she really is and this to counter not entirely unfounded assertions that she is the daughter of a Jew. The earlier birth-date to which she lays claim is to substantiate her statement that she is the offspring of an affair prior to her mother’s marriage to Herr Friedlander, a Jew.
Dr. Max Naumann, the valiant Jewish defender of all Hitler principles-except the application of them to his Nationalist German Jews-has seen the number of his followers increase repidly since Hitlerism came to power. Dr. Naumann, it will be recalled, is the leading spirit in the small group of German Jews who profess a Germanism rivaling that of the Nazis themselves.
In recent weeks, however, Dr. Naumann has encountered competition from another group of nationalist Jews who preach also the doctrine of National Socialism.
Despite the grouth of his movement and his strenuous endeavors to ingratiate himself with the Nazis, Dr. Naumann has had but little success in his efforts to be appointed Nazi commissar in chief over the Jews of Germany. They Hitlerites seem to gather that despite his protestations, acceptance of him would run counter to their theory that a Jew is not a German, racially or nationally.
