The capital district branch of the Young People’s League of the United Synagogue of America was organized at a convention of more than seventy-five delegates representing young people’s groups in Albany, Troy Amsterdam, Schenectady and other nearby communities, which was held here yesterday at Temple Beth-El.
The principal speakers were Rabbi Joel S. Geffen of Temple Beth El, who delivered a welcoming address; Joseph Weinstein, president of the Temple, and Irwin I. Hyman of New York City, chairman of the educational committee of the Young People’s League.
Speaking on “The Educational Program of the Y. P. L. in Relation to the Synagogue” Hyman called for a broadening of the scope of the synagogue which, he said, the young people should demand.
The convention was presided over by Jack Olshansky, president of the Albany young people’s group. Other speakers were Rabbi Abraham Simon of Albany, Ruth Finklestein of Troy, Nathan Sagan of Amsterdam and Sarah Kelman of Troy.
The following officers were elected: president, Jack Olshansky, Albany; vice-presidents: Stanley Woolman, Troy, and Nathan Sagan, Amsterdam; secretary, Dorothy Finkel, Albany, and treasurer, Ruth Finklestein, Troy.
