The chairman of Israel’s Histadrut labor federation, Amir Peretz, won re- election by a landslide victory over opponent Maxim Levy. Observers said that the ultimate strength of Histadrut, which is the umbrella organization for Israel’s labor unions, will depend less on who won than on the outcome of government plans to privatize key industries that were once trade union strongholds.
