“The city of Montreal should set the pace for the entire dominion of Canada, “Mrs. A. J. Freiman, Dominion chairman of the United Palestine Appeal, said at the conference held here to organize the campaign in the metropolis.
An effort is being made to obtain the cooperation of all the organizations and synagogues in the drive which will be launched on April 15 and will be carried on simultaneously in all parts of Canada.
Organizations present at the first meeting included delegations of Hadassah, Habonim, Shaar Hashomayim Auxiliary, Council of Jewish Women, Spanish and Portuguese Sisterhood, Shaar Hashomayim Synagogue, Poale Zion, Mizrachi, Jewish State Party, Russian Polish Hebrew Sick Society, Independent Hebrew Sick Society and Hechalutz Organization.
The delegates represented at this meeting promised cooperation in making the campaign a success.
Prime minister Richard B, Bennett of Canada will open the campaign in a national hook-up.
The Canadian Zionists are also seeking a fund for the Kfar Ussishkin, a colony in Palestine.
Rabbi J. L. Zlotnick, educational director, speaking in Yiddish, appealed for generous contributions
“Jews without education can not possibly carry on for posterity as they had throughout centuries,” he said.
Dr. Emanuel Hertz, of New York, an outstanding Jewish scholar and philanthropist also spoke. He assured his audience that Montreal’s Jewish schools are on a par with any in New York.
Rabbi H. Abramowitz and C. B. Fainer presided. Clarence Michaels, David Kirsch and Louis Sendel also spoke.
Samuel Hart, Barney Aaron and C. B. Fainer, are directing the campaign.
