The comptrollers of New York City and New York State announced they were lifting their threats of sanctions against Swiss banks. They also recommended that other state and city officials not proceed with boycotts or sanctions — a recommendation the other officials will likely follow. The announcement came after Switzerland’s leading commercial banks announced a $1.25 billion settlement of Holocaust-era claims. Financial officials in about 20 states and 30 cities in the United States had said they would impose sanctions if no settlement were reached.
