The dismissal of a lawsuit against Austrian businesses is expected to expedite payments to Austrian victims of the Holocaust. A U.S. federal judge on Wednesday dismissed a case brought by Austrian Jewish victims. The Austrian government had sought “legal peace” before paying $210 million in compensation negotiated in early 2001 with the Claims Conference. “With this agreement now nearly five years old, with a single payment yet to be made from this fund to aging Austrian Jewish victims of Nazism, we believe that this is a significant step toward compensation payments finally being made,” said Gideon Taylor, the Claims Conference’s executive vice president. “These negotiations were about symbolic recognition of historical injustice as much as about the money.”
