The European Union approved a proposal that Eastern European countries hoping to join the organization curtail racism. Sweden, which made the proposal, said it was important to educate people in former Soviet-bloc countries about the Holocaust. The group also welcomed a Swedish offer to host an international conference on Holocaust education next year.
