The former speaker of the Knesset apologized to the European Parliament for Israeli government policy. Referring to recent events, notably Israel’s killing of Hamas leader Abdel Aziz Rantissi and Prime Minister Ariel Sharon’s plan to withdraw unilaterally from the Gaza Strip, Avraham Burg on Tuesday told members of the European Parliament, “I apologize to you, because I find no words in which to come to defend the policies of my government. But at the end of the day, this is the democratically elected government of Israel.”
