The Foundation for Jewish Camping received an $11.2 million grant to establish a preteen camping program. The money from the Jim Joseph Foundation targets preteens in communities west of the Rockies. It will enable the camping foundation to provide 3,000 children with two summers at a Jewish camp.
This is the second major donation to the Foundation for Jewish Camping in the last two months. In early May, the foundation announced a $15 million gift from an anonymous donor in Chicago. “Jewish camping is one of the keystones for connecting these youngsters to the Jewish community,” said Al Levitt, the president of the Jim Joseph Foundation. “This was actually one of Mr. Joseph’s real interests, which he was exploring before his death. We’re excited to be able to carry on that interest with our grant to the FJC.” The initiative will provide a $1,800 grant to first-time campers in selected communities to attend a nonprofit Jewish overnight camp for at least three weeks. Children returning for a second year are eligible for a $1,000 grant.
