The government of East Germany was sharply attacked over the weekend by Israel’s Ambassador to West Germany, Yitzhak Ben Ari, for the reception it accorded last week to Palestine Liberation Organization chief Yasir Arafat by East Germany’s leader Erich Honecker and Prime Minister Willi Stoph. Arafat was received with the pomp and circumstances befitting a head of state. Ben Ari also denounced the East German government for its policy of cooperating with the PLO. He noted that one of the training centers for Palestinian terrorists is a site adjacent to the former Nazi concentration camp of Buchenwald.
