The government recently awarded Israel Barukh Mayer the “Order of the Popular Republic of Bulgaria” on the occasion of his 70th birthday. Mayer has held several government posts including a position in the Bulgarian Council of Ministers and the Culture Ministry. An active community member, he served as editor of the Jewish newspaper of Sofia and was a council member of the Jewish Cultural Organizations of Bulgaria.
