The heads of the nation’s four major maritime unions appealed today to President Johnson to hold fast to the position that the United States considered the Egyptian-blockaded Gulf of Akaba “international waters” and would “insist on maintaining its integrity.”
The appeal was contained in a telegram to the President signed by Joseph Curran, president of the National Maritime Union; Thomas W. Gleason, president of the International Longshoremen’s Association; Jesse Calhoun, president of the National Marine Engineers Beneficial Association; and Capt. Lloyd W. Sheldon, president of the International Organization of Masters, Mates and Pilots. A copy of the telegram was sent to Arthur J. Goldberg, the chief American delegate to the United Nations.
