The Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society called on Congress to extend a cash-assistance program for elderly and disabled refugees. In a Capitol Hill briefing Wednesday, HIAS emphasized the difficulty that elderly refugees face in meeting citizenship deadlines and other requirements. According to 1996 legislation, humanitarian refugees must take U.S. citizenship within seven years of arriving in the United States in order to receive Supplemental Security Income benefits, which help many refugees cover their basic needs.
