The Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society unanimously passed resolutions calling for the protection and humane treatment of asylum seekers entering the United States. The resolutions called on Congress to consider passing the Refugee Protection Act of 1999 and restore “fairness, balance and justice in our asylum process.” Since the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act was passed in 1996, HIAS has voiced concerns that asylum seekers are being turned away without getting a fair hearing.
