The Israeli army saluted hundreds of volunteers from 37 countries who fought in the 1948 War for Independence. Some 450 members of the Machal — a Hebrew acronym for Overseas Volunteers — returned to Israel to help celebrate the jubilee and to remember friends who fell in battle.
