The Israeli Cabinet rejected as “unacceptable” and “damaging to the security interests” of the Jewish state a reported American proposal for a 13 percent Israeli redeployment in the West Bank as part of a package to move the deadlocked Israeli-Palestinian peace process forward. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called President Clinton twice over the weekend in an attempt to persuade him not to go public with the U.S. proposal, according to Israeli media reports. The developments came as U.S. Middle East envoy Dennis Ross was scheduled to visit the region later this week.
