The Jewish Labor Committee criticized Israeli Premier Menachem Begin, President Carter and Egyptian President Anwar Sadat for contributing to the breakdown in the Middle East peace negotiations. The peace momentum that was created last November has been halted by two developments, the JLC said, “Sadat’s precipitous breaking off of the negotiations (with Israel) and Begin’s encouragement of extending settlements in occupied territories and his interpretation of the meaning of Resolution 242 as it applies to the withdrawal from the West Bank.” The JLC also said that the Carter Administration “in seeking to write the peace rather than serve as the convener in the Middle East seems to be adopting a pro-Arab policy.”
