The Jewish monthly newspaper “Shalom” says the Italian government has fixed national referendums for June 11 coinciding with Shavuot despite being warned devout Jews cannot write on that day. In its forthcoming edition, Shalom said Premier Giulio Andreotti’s government had been told devout Jews would be unable to vote that day. “It may seem excessive that a minority within a minority should raise this question at times so difficult for the nation, but it is a matter of principle…a warning for all the nation’s minorities,” Shalom declared.
