The judge in the war crimes trial of Maurice Papon may have to step down because his credibility has been tainted, according to legal observers. The assessment came after a prosecution lawyer called on the judge to remove himself because he was related to Jews whom Papon allegedly deported from France during the wartime Vichy regime. If Judge Jean-Louis Castagnede does step down, the whole trial could be threatened.
