The leader of the Likud Party urged the Israeli government not to rush into any peace deal with the Palestinians. Referring to the pressure to reach an agreement before President Clinton ends his term, Ariel Sharon said, “Presidents come and go, but Israel has to stay forever.” Speaking to an international gathering of Jewish journalists in Jerusalem, Sharon also said that Israel should take strong action against Lebanon, which he said should be held responsible for Hezbollah actions against Israel.
