The main U.S. intercity rail service bought a new fare collection system that was developed by the Israeli arm of the Motorola company. Amtrak plans to introduce the hand-held devices, purchased at a cost of $24 million, on its high-speed rail service linking Boston, New York and Washington. The new service, which has been delayed, is scheduled to begin operating next spring.
