The Massachusetts State Senate proposed making a sales-tax holiday two days long to enable observant Jews to participate. The State House passed a bill earlier this month that would have set Saturday, Aug. 13 as this year’s sales-tax-free shopping day, but the Senate instead proposed a tax-free weekend, enabling Orthodox Jewish vendors and consumers to benefit as well. Alan Ronkin, the deputy director of the Jewish Community Relations Council of Greater Boston, welcomed the proposal.
