The month of Iyar, from April 15 to May 13, has been designated Hebrew Month by its sponsor, the Histadrut Ivrith, Hebrew Language and Culture Association of America. As in the past, the month focuses on the life of a major Jewish personality. This year, it is dedicated to Mrs. Golda Meir, Israel’s Premier. A highlight of the project is an essay contest on the life and accomplishments of Mrs. Meir, Students from grade four and upwards are expected to write in Hebrew. The contest ends May 25. Histadruth Ivrith believes that the Hebrew Month project will contribute to the involvement of children in the Hebrew movement in this country and will imbue Hebrew school students with love for Hebrew and its culture and enhance identification and loyalty with Jews in Israel, the Soviet Union and elsewhere.
