What happened at Miami? Why did the fourteen Jewish delegates at the annual convention of the Amateur Athletic Union zealously act to suppress every bit of protest against American participation in the Berlin Olympic Games?
There was strong sentiment in the convention for reiteration of the organization’s stand against participation in the Olympics because of discrimination practiced against Jewish athletes. Why did the Jewish delegates lead the move to thwart it?
Sheriff Haddock of Pittsburgh, a Gentile, declared that he had been prepared to make a vigorous fight against American participation.
“I was astounded to discover that the fourteen Jewish delegates had met and decided previously not to bring up the anti-Olympic issue,” he said. “There was nothing I could do after this decision.”
The Jewish delegates, it is obvious, not only failed to display courage in fighting for a principle but were also guilty of checking what might have been an excellent dem#nstration of civ###tion’s reaction to Hitlerism.
