The Orthodox Union commended a New York state initiative to provide tax credits for educational instruction to low-income families. The proposal, introduced by Gov. George Pataki, would give families $500 per student for educational expenses if they live in jurisdictions with failing schools. “The governor’s proposal is a very good first step toward enacting a program which will empower all families of school-age children in New York,” said the O.U.’s president, Stephen Savitsky. The proposal could help families with tuition at day schools and other parochial education.
