The short-lived flight to freedom in Switzerland by a convicted Nazi collaborator was organized by a clandestine network of aging French right- wingers, the London Sunday Times revealed. A French inquiry has established that admirers of Maurice Papon smuggled him out of France on the eve of his appeal last week against a 10-year jail sentence for complicity in the deportation of some 1,500 French Jews during the Nazi occupation.
