The Simon Wiesenthal Center called on the foreign minister of Latvia to retract his recent statement that most Latvians “did not participate in the murders which took place during the Holocaust.” The statement, which appeared last month in the International Herald Tribune, is “not only misleading, it is patently false,” the director of the center’s Jerusalem office, Efraim Zuroff, wrote in an open letter to Valdis Birkavs.
