The Steuben Society has finally surrendered. After long months of half-hearted resistance to Nazi blandishments, this old and time-honored society has at last turned its back on the laudable American principles on which it was founded and gone over lock, stock and barrel to the cause of Adolf Hitler.
That is the only interpretation that can be put upon the speech of Theodore Hoffmann Monday night and the acceptance of his report by Steuben’s National Council. Mr. Hoffmann visited Germany, was granted an interview by Herr Hitler and came back convinced that all was for the best in Naziland.
The National Council, bulldozed by the tactics of a former Brooklyn singing waiter and the “storm troops” leaders here, fell in line enthusiastically. It found it much easier to forget principles and ideals than courageously fight for their preservation.
While we regret that the Steuben Society has fallen by the wayside, nevertheless, we prefer to see that organization in its true colors rather than in the sham guise of “neutrality” it has sported for a year.
