The threatened shut-down of Israel’s universities was cancelled Tuesday after the government agreed to provide the $50 million needed to keep them functioning. The universities would have closed for lack of funds. They have undertaken to cut their budget by eight percent next year by reducing teaching and administrative staffs through dismissals and attrition. Retired personnel will not be replaced and tuition fees will go up.
