The U.S. assistant secretary of state for Near Eastern affairs urged the Jewish community to “have faith” in President Clinton and U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright as they continue to push Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to accept the American peace plan. “The president did not get the reputation in the Jewish community as the most pro-Israel in the history of the relationship for nothing,” Martin Indyk said in response to a question after a speech to the American Jewish Committee. In his speech, Indyk said charges by Israeli officials that Washington was issuing ultimatums to the Jewish state are “totally inappropriate given the way we moved forward with Israel in this process.”
