The U.S. assistant secretary of state for Near Eastern affairs criticized continued Israeli settlement activity during a meeting this week with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. While acknowledging Israel’s point that there is no clause in the Wye accord obliging Israel to refrain from such activity, Martin Indyk repeated American concerns that settlement construction could hamper peace efforts with the Palestinians.
