The U.S. Conference of Mayors gave its backing to President Bush’s faith-based initiative, which would give religious groups an increased role in providing social services. Addressing the criticism that the initiative will erode church-state separation, Bush told the conference that the proposed federal funding to charities and religious organizations will be spent on social services, not worship services.
