The U.S. Department of Education commended a Jewish organization for being one of the few groups to come to the aid of a Catholic group 75 years ago. The American Jewish Committee was the only Jewish organization to file a court brief on behalf of the Society of the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary in its successful 1925 Supreme Court appeal challenging an Oregon law that imposed criminal penalties on parents who failed to send their children to public school.
