The U.S. House Judiciary Committee postponed its vote on a controversial school prayer amendment to the U.S. Constitution until Wednesday. The “Religious Freedom Amendment,” sponsored by Rep. Ernest Istook (R-Okla.), would pave the way for government subsidy of prayer in schools and others forms of religious expression on public property. Church-state watchdogs, including most Jewish groups, mounted opposition to the measure as the committee prepared to move it to the House floor for a vote.
