The U.S. House of Representatives’ Appropriations Committee added restrictions to Palestinian Authority aid before referring a bill to the full House. The committee amended a supplemental appropriations bill March 8 to say that no direct assistance will go to the Palestinian Authority until “it has demonstrated its commitment to the principles of nonviolence, the recognition of Israel, and the acceptance of previous agreements and obligations.” The amendment is separate from another bill that would permanently legislate far-reaching restrictions on assistance to the Palestinians.
