The U.S. Senate Banking Committee unanimously approved a bill to create a presidential commission to examine Holocaust victims’ assets in the United States. The proposed commission would be charged with examining the fate of dormant bank accounts, artworks, insurance policies, looted gold, and a range of other assets that may have arrived in the United States during and after World War II. Advocates of the legislation say they do not expect to find much, but want to set an example for Switzerland and other nations to follow. The Clinton administration supports the measure, and a similar bill is pending in the House.
