The U.S. Senate passed legislation that would remove all trade barriers between the United States and Jordan. A leading opponent of the bill, Sen. Phil Gramm (R-Tex.), said he dropped his objections because it was important that the United States send a signal of friendship to Jordan, an ally that could be instrumental in building support for a U.S.-led anti-terrorism coalition.
