The U.S. State Department refused to comment on Ariel Sharon’s plan to evacuate Jewish settlements in the Gaza Strip. State Department spokesman Richard Boucher said Monday that the department would not commend the Israeli prime minister’s announcement because it can’t be taken in isolation from Israel’s other commitments — an apparent reference to a U.S. demand that Israel freeze West Bank settlement building and remove illegal outposts.
