The U.S. State Department rejected an Israeli appeal not to go public with American proposals to revive the Middle East peace process. Martin Indyk, assistant secretary of state for Near Eastern affairs, conveyed the message to one of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s top advisers, Uzi Arad, during meetings in Washington, according to sources. Israeli Trade Minister Natan Sharansky heard the same message from other U.S. officials. Netanyahu, meanwhile, told reporters that “only Israel” could decide what its security needs are — implying that the Clinton administration should not force any proposals on the Jewish state.
