The U.S. Supreme Court ruled that most of Ellis Island, the historic gateway for millions of Jewish immigrants and others, belongs to New Jersey, not New York. In a 6-3 decision, the court settled a 160-year-old border dispute by declaring that all the land added to the island to create the landmark U.S. immigration processing center from the 1890s until 1954 belongs to New Jersey. The ruling allows New York to keep the island’s original three acres.
